Mermaid Wall Art

This mermaid is 5 feet in length and cut from plywood.  I applied texture, painted, and gave it a wax finish. This photo shows the mermaid at different stages of painting. The mermaid will be hung in a home with nautical and antique decor throughout, so she had to look aged.

The Mad Hatter

There are more decorations to share, but this was my favorite. He is life size and out of plywood. I used acrylic paint and sealed him with a matte finish so photos with the Mad Hatter would not have a glare.  A glossy finish will reflect the camera flash. I embellished the Mad Hatter with lace from old curtains, thread, safety pins, a key, real buttons, fabric, hat pins and a feather. He didn't dance at prom, but he posed for lots of pictures!

Mad Hatter's Tea Party Cupcakes

I had so much fun making the stands for the cupcakes! I loved how the table was decorated. The cupcakes were super cute and yummo!!   http://www.cupcakerybythesea.com
A Cupcakery by the Sea baked and decorated our cupcakes this year and last and we were all impressed.

Talented Prom Committee

The giant canvas and these centerpieces were painted by the students and parents. There was definitely talent on this committee!

Alice in Wonderland Prom

Here are some of the centerpieces on the tables. The bubbles instead of confetti on the tables were a big hit.

Prom Table Centerpieces

Can you tell so far that it didn't matter what version of Alice in Wonderland we used for inspiration and decoration? I think it made their prom unique!

NWFSC Collegiate High School prom 2013

Pictured above is the candy buffet table, one of the centerpieces, the podium, and the entrance. The stairs were not going to be used, so it was a good place for the card to paint the roses red.

Alice in Wonderland Prom

The prom is over and it looks like rain, so I thought I'd update my blog with some of the decorations I made for this year. The prom committee was very helpful as there were some talented moms and student artists who took wood table centerpieces I cut out home to paint. We also had several work days to make giant flowers, mushrooms, signs.  Here are 2 characters I cut out of plywood and painted. The White Rabbit stood outside the giant keyhole door to the dance hall.

Remote Control Boxes

Finishing today's posts are photos of remote control holders. I made one box for my brother for Christmas and the other was a gift order using colors to match a home movie theater.
The box was cut from plywood. The design was wood burned, painted and sealed with Polycrylic.

Christmas Tablescape

Since I have an orange accent wall I tried a teal, silver, white and orange tablescape this Christmas. I have made the narrow box in the middle in different sizes to fit customer's dining table shapes. Mine is usually filled with white sand and white shells. I'd love to see what customers have put in their boxes or if they change the contents seasonally.

Sea Turtle Art

Does this house look familiar? Thanks Juanita, my repeat customer and friend. The turtles were made from plywood to represent her and her husband, their 4 children, and their love for sea turtles.

Wreath Stand

My friend Pat has a glass front door and didn't want to hang her holiday wreaths on it, so I made her a wreath stand using a 4X4 post. Of course I had to make one for myself too! The stand in the middle is Pat's. I used a curtain finial as a topper.
Here are my holiday wreaths displayed on the porch. I used a wood post topper and a smaller hook on mine. I used battery operated lights on the Halloween wreath so I taped velcro on the back of the post to attach the on/off switch.
Spray painting the entire piece a solid color gave it a nice finish since the toppers and molding used to trim it were different colors.
These stands would be good for a small hanging plant or a welcome sign.

Craft Fair Necklace Displays

The necklace displays were ordered by vendors selling jewelry at the HB Gift Fair. I had fun making these. I broke a chair that I purchased at a second hand store and used the spindles along with some starfish I bought at Kathleen's Kottage. A fun place to shop for gifts in Santa Rosa Beach!
The mermaid necklace holder was made from an older display. I added the mermaid top piece, sides, base and a dowel. Then I painted it with chalk paint and gave it a wax finish.

Ornament Display

This was the display I made for the seahorse ornaments which I now use to hold my necklaces. I used a 2X4, pine for the base, a dowel, small finial and starfish drawer pull from Hobby Lobby. I painted it with chalk paint, sanded and gave it a wax finish.

Craft Fair Table Display

I thought I'd take a break from today's projects and do some updating. This was made for myself to display the Halloween ornaments I was selling at the Hammock Bay Gift Fair. It was made with an 11"cut piece of a 4X4, dowels, a curtain finial and spray painted black. This was just a start for a lot of 4X4 ideas.

Ladybug from Cirque du Soleil Ovo

This was my favorite table centerpiece for prom 2012. She is cut out of plywood using my scroll saw and painted with acrylics. I attached her to a 4X4 post and embellished with paint, beads, and flower petals. Today I will find out what the seniors chose for prom 2013. I can hardly wait!

Frogs on my front porch.  I took these photos with a Coolpix L120 on the macro setting & used the PhotoToaster app on my ipad for the color and effects.

Pantry Space

My friends and neighbors are awfully trusting of this self-taught carpenter! This is my first time building shelves for a pantry. There were high ceilings to add shelves all the way up and just enough room for a custom spice rack. There is usually wasted space in new homes. Pantries and closets with high ceilings could always use extra shelving for more storage. The laminated shelving works better in this pantry than the short metal ones used before (upper left).

For diapers, lotion, powder and such....

Custom diaper box to match baby blanket material.

Coastal Dining Decor

I made this centerpiece for my own table out of wood. Paint, starfish knobs, sand and seashells and I have a beachy table decoration. It will be fun to change the contents for holidays.
